Though this specific fish would have died in the cold Missouri winter, other species can survive and damage the local ecosystem.

Graham adds that some aquarium plants can also pose a threat to the local ecosystem. Invasive species are a big problem for Missouri, and stopping aquarium dumping is one way to curb their spread.

The MDC adds that aquarium dumping is illegal and alternatives are available, such as giving the fish to an aquarium store or aquarium club.
